The BackgroundChecks.com integration with Greenhouse Recruiting allows you to order and review background checks directly from Greenhouse, enabling a seamless hiring workflow.
Requirements to get started
- A BackgroundChecks.com account
- A Greenhouse account with admin permissions

Create a Harvest API key
To configure the BackgroundChecks.com integration, you’ll need to create a Harvest API key.
Follow the steps in this article to create the key, and verify that the permissions below are selected when configuring the BackgroundChecks.com integration. Copy the API key as you’ll need to paste it in the next step.
Credentials
In the Create New Credential box, make the following selections:
- API Type: Harvest
- Partner: BackgroundChecks.com
- Description: BackgroundChecks.com Integration
Permissions
Verify that the following permissions are selected for the BackgroundChecks.com integration:

Users
- GET: List Users

Candidates
- POST: Add Note

Custom Fields
- POST: Create custom field
- DELETE: Delete custom field
Enter API Key in BackgroundChecks.com
- Log into your BackgroundChecks.com account
- Navigate to Integrations & API → Partner Integrations
- Select the Greenhouse integration toggle switch

Paste the Greenhouse API Key
- Select the Greenhouse Admin to be the owner of the integration & choose which team you want the orders associated with
Create a webhook
Next, create a webhook in Greenhouse Recruiting. Follow the steps in this article to create your webhook, using the settings below:
- Name: Backgroundchecks integration
- When: Candidate has been hired
- Endpoint URL: The endpoint URL you obtained from BackgroundChecks.com
- Secret key: The secret key you obtained from BackgroundChecks.com
- Error recipient email: The email address that will receive an email notification if the webhook fails. BackgroundChecks.com recommends choosing a Greenhouse Recruiting Site Admin to receive the email notification.
Once you create the webhook, the integration is set up and ready to use.

How to order and view background checks
- Background checks by default are attached to a job
- When you advance a candidate to the Offer stage and create an offer, you’ll see the option to order a background check
- You have the option to change the package for a candidate at this stage in the dropdown
- You can add background check packages to both an existing job or new job:
For existing jobs
- Go to All Jobs → Select the job
- Click Job Setup → Job Info
- In the Details section, you will find a setting for “Default BackgroundChecks.com Report Package” → Select Edit icon → Choose package you want to use for this job
For new jobs
Select the default package during job creation under “Default BackgroundChecks.com Report Package”
Note: All background check package options in the dropdown are set in ClearChecks and not in Greenhouse Recruiting.
