Allowing candidates to provide a preferred first name shows your company’s commitment to an inclusive hiring process. Many people use a nickname or a name that better reflects their identity, rather than their legal name. Knowing a candidate’s preferred name before the first interview helps create a positive and welcoming first impression.
Turn on the preferred first name field
The preferred first name field can be turned on when editing a job post. You can hide the field completely, make it optional, or require it. By default, the field will be optional.
While filling out their application, the candidate will see a field to enter a preferred first name.
Where you'll see the candidate's preferred name
If a candidate has entered a preferred first name it will be prioritized in the following experiences:
- Candidate profile
- Scorecards
When it's important to identify a candidate by either their legal name or preferred first name, their legal name will appear first, followed by their preferred name in parentheses, and then their last name.
A candidate's full name will be displayed in both search and when viewing the All candidates page.
Any documents or processes of legal significance, like a background check, will use the candidate's legal name.
Use the token {{PREFERRED_FIRST_NAME}} to insert the candidate's preferred first name into emails. To include both their preferred first name and last name, use {{PREFERRED_FULL_NAME}}.
If the field was left empty or is unavailable, the token {{PREFERRED_FIRST_NAME}} will use the candidate's first name. For {{PREFERRED_FULL_NAME}}, the token will use the candidate's first and last name.
